FROM THE GROUND UP

From the Ground Up is a grass-roots volunteer effort to help keep Gettysburg's downtown litter free for a more beautiful place to live and visit.

From April to November, faithful volunteers meet every Monday morning between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. to clean up downtown. They walk the blocks around Lincoln Square and Steinwehr Avenue to pick up trash and debris from the streets of Gettysburg. They also organize extra clean up days following special events or holiday weekends. They meet every Monday at 8 a.m. at the Majestic Theater.

Founded by Dr. Sam Mudd in 1999, the program provides volunteer street clean-up services for the historic streets of Gettysburg. His goal was to model “behavior befitting the historic and cultural status of our town” and set an example for all residents and visitors. Later in his life, Dr. Mudd transitioned management of the program to Main Street Gettysburg.

A GETTYSBURG CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL

Volunteers also assist with our annual holiday festival, A Gettysburg Christmas Festival on the first weekend in December. Preparation begins months in advance to manage its requirements. Volunteers help with decorations, signage, setup, fundraising, information, cleanup, and much more. It’s an exciting weekend of activities and entertainment that draw more than 10,000 visitors for the weekend. The Christmas Festival could not happen without our amazing volunteers!

LONG LONG LONG LONG DINNER

The first Long Dinner event was held in 2019, when we hosted a community dinner down the middle of Baltimore Street. Friends and neighbors gathered together to celebrate our community in this unique opportunity. Volunteers helped set up blocks of tables and chairs, manage trash, support fundraising, hand out materials, and of course, clean up at the end.

While the pandemic did interrupt this event from becoming an annual celebration, Main Street Gettysburg intends to bring it back soon.
